Why I love SG even more after traveling the world

Happy 60th Birthday, Singapore!

In partnership with

Arigato, dear investor,

This week, Singapore turns 60 — and my heart is full of gratitude. 🥰

After traveling to so many places over the years, I’ve grown to appreciate our little red dot more than ever. Here’s why…

1. Safety
We live in one of the safest countries in the world. I can walk around without worrying about my valuables being stolen — something we often take for granted.

I still remember a trip to Europe years ago with my sister — we got pickpocketed multiple times! Luckily, we had taken precautions and kept nothing valuable in our backpacks. That trip made me realize how rare and precious Singapore’s safety really is.

2. Clean & well-kept
Singapore is spotless — and it’s not just about looking nice. It’s also about how our environment reflects our values. Here, everyone has a roof over their head, no matter their income. The government steps in to ensure no one is left behind.

When I visited the US and Canada, I was shocked to see so many homeless people, even in city centers — many young, and some appearing to be on drugs. I’m deeply grateful that in Singapore, we have no guns, no drugs lying around, and a clean, safe environment to live in.

3. Cost-efficient & convenient
Getting around Singapore is so easy with our public transport network — and if I’m in a rush, Grab rides are still reasonably priced.

In contrast, when I take Uber in the US or Canada, a 20–30 min ride can easily cost USD $40–50 (more than double Singapore’s rates!) And while transport there is often less convenient, here, hawker centres also give us affordable and delicious food options at every corner.

I’m thankful the government works hard to keep prices of necessities under control.

Of course, I also see many Singaporeans struggle to save — not because of rising costs alone, but because as income grows, so does lifestyle inflation: dining out at fancy cafes too often, splurging on the latest designer items, or buying a car when it’s not truly needed.

If all that money was invested instead — even just in the S&P 500 at 10% a year — it could mean a difference of over $1 million in the long run!

I recently made a video on 8 middle-class habits that unknowingly keep you poor. Watch it here to start taking control of your financial future:

Singapore isn’t perfect — there’s always room for improvement. But I believe our leaders have done a remarkable job, especially when I think about how Mr. Lee Kuan Yew transformed a small fishing village into the thriving garden city we are today.
While not everyone may agree with every decision he made, I deeply respect his dedication and the legacy he left for us.

So this National Day, let’s be proud to be Singaporean. Let’s be grateful for what we have — because what you appreciate in life, will always appreciate in value.

Wishing you a beautiful celebration with your loved ones.
