I didn’t expect this trip to teach me an investing lesson —
but it did.

This December, my sister and I traveled to Guilin and Zhang Jia Jie in China.

And honestly?
I was shocked by how affordable everything was.

December is considered a low season there.
Most people avoid traveling because of the colder weather.

But because of that…

• Hotels cost only $20–$40 SGD per night
• Spacious, clean, comfortable — way beyond expectations
• During peak season, the same hotels can easily cost 3–5× more

In total, my sister and I spent about $2,000 SGD for 2 weeks.
That’s roughly $1,000 per person.

We ate well.
We explored freely.
We slept comfortably.

Honestly — we lived like kings.

What surprised me even more wasn’t just the savings.

Because it was off-peak season, there were fewer tourists.
The mountains felt quieter.
Nature felt more peaceful.
We didn’t have to squeeze, rush, or fight for photo spots.

And that’s when it clicked.

👉 Traveling is a lot like investing.

Most people want to travel only during peak season —
when prices are high and crowds are overwhelming.

And most people invest the same way.

They chase:
• What’s popular
• What’s hyped
• What everyone is talking about

That’s usually when prices are already expensive.

But experienced investors think differently.

They look for sectors and assets that are out of favour —
the off-peak seasons of the market.

They buy when things are:
• Quiet
• Unpopular
• Underappreciated

And that’s where opportunity lives.

Just recently, I added more ETFs in one such sector.

No hype.
No noise.

And within 1 month, it was already up about 6%. Not to mention, I also collected about 4% options premium on this ETF along the way.

That’s the power of positioning yourself early —
before the crowd returns.

Just like travel, investing doesn’t have to be rushed, stressful, or expensive.

Sometimes, the best experiences —
and the best returns —
come from going off-peak.
