wake up call
Arigato, dear investor,
When I first attended the Berkshire Hathaway AGM in Omaha, I remember being wide-eyed.
It felt like stepping into the Olympics of investing.
That was when I first came across Guy Spier — a respected fund manager and author of The Education of a Value Investor. Calm. Thoughtful. Deeply principled.
He runs the Aquamarine Fund, which since inception delivered a total return of 1185.6% — slightly ahead of the S&P 500 (1103.4%), and far ahead of the MSCI World (779.8%) and FTSE 100 (280.6%).
But recently, he announced he is returning outside capital and winding down the fund for external investors.
Not because of performance.
Not because of market timing.
Because he has brain cancer.
Not in despair.
But in perspective.
Here are five lessons he shared that I want to carry with me into this new year — and perhaps you might want to as well.

1️⃣ Live your best life — now.
You don’t know what tomorrow holds.
If there’s something you’ve always wanted to do…
Start.
We delay joy so easily.
“After I make more money.”
“After I’m less busy.”
“After the market stabilises.”
But what if “later” never comes?
2️⃣ Use the gifts you were given.
Whatever the universe gave you — use it.
Don’t feel ashamed of it.
Don’t downplay it.
As long as you’re not harming yourself or others, go ahead and enjoy your strengths.
That part really struck me.
We are so quick to judge others…
And sometimes even quicker to shrink ourselves.
Why?
If you have good IT skills — use it.
If you’re analytical — use it.
If you’re charismatic — use it.
Play the hand you were dealt.
Fully.
3️⃣ Delete envious people.
This one was bold.
He said envy is unhealthy — for both sides.
It creates guilt.
It creates resentment.
It creates distance.
Life is too short to carry that weight.
Protect your energy.
Choose environments that elevate you.
4️⃣ There are only two kinds of time.
The ever-present now.
And the eternal.
That made me reflect deeply.
In investing, we obsess over quarterly numbers.
In life, we obsess over small inconveniences.
But if something doesn’t matter in the eternal…
And it doesn’t matter right now…
Why let it steal your peace?
5️⃣ Keep a positive attitude. Don’t complain.
He said he’s tried the other ways.
They don’t work.
Complaining doesn’t heal.
Negativity doesn’t extend time.
Bitterness doesn’t improve returns.
But positivity?
It changes how you experience the time you have.
Reading his letter reminded me:
Life can change very quickly.
It’s not worth fussing over small matters —
Being angry at someone.
Losing money from a bad investment.
Even getting scammed.
As long as you can recover and bounce back stronger…
You’re still in the game.
And being in the game is a privilege.
Right now, my goal is clear.
To grow my investments into multi-millions — for my family and I.
And to continue educating like-minded people toward financial abundance and freedom.
Until life gives me a different priority,
I will enjoy the process. 😃
So let me ask you:
What is your current goal and priority?
And how are you choosing to enjoy it — instead of merely chasing it?
Reply to this email and let me know. I read every message. 💛
